Secure the cloud that millions rely on

Security at Capitec is a board-level priority. It isn't a department running quietly in the background; it sits at the centre of everything we build. With AI-driven threats evolving fast and a CIO who keeps security at the top of the agenda, our Cyber Security team has more real problems to solve than ever, and more support to solve them.

We're looking for a Cyber Security Engineer to help implement, support and manage the security solutions that protect our systems, networks, users and data. In this role, your focus is the cloud, primarily AWS, but also Azure, Salesforce and Microsoft 365. Day to day, you'll monitor alerts, identify security findings and work closely with our application and support teams to fix issues.

The role splits roughly 70% operations, 20% engineering and 10% self-development. It sits within a structured career progression model, where you'll take on meaningful projects that sharpen your decision-making and problem-solving over time.

What you'll do

Cyber security systems management

  • Secure our cloud environments across AWS, Azure, Salesforce and Microsoft 365
  • Update and upgrade security systems to address emerging threats, and run regular vulnerability assessments to keep our environment resilient
  • Apply encryption, secure data handling and vulnerability controls, including preventing issues like SQL injection
  • Keep comprehensive documentation of security systems, configurations, standards, policies and procedures

Operational excellence

  • Act on security incidents and cyber-attacks quickly, investigate root causes and recommend corrective actions
  • Troubleshoot and debug to resolve issues and maintain system stability
  • React to monitoring and alerting events in good time
  • Keep stakeholders informed about the latest security incidents and issues

Risk and compliance

  • Apply security policies and procedures to meet industry regulations and standards, and stay current on environment changes so you can contribute to policy updates
  • Support regular security audits, identify vulnerabilities and collaborate with external security experts on third-party audits

Learning and growth

  • Develop and maintain your own depth in cyber security patterns and practices, and apply what you learn to improve what we use
  • Stay ahead of threats, including AI-driven ones
  • Contribute to a team that actively invests in your development

What you'll need

Education

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology will be advantageous

Experience

  • 2 to 3 years in cyber security, IT security or a related technical field
  • Foundational AWS knowledge is essential
  • Experience with Azure, Salesforce or Microsoft 365 is advantageous

Technical skills

  • IT systems processes (SDLC)
  • Python, PowerShell, bash scripting
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS and Azure
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform, CloudFormation or similar
  • Networking protocols and security architecture
  • Security tools and technologies
  • Awareness of the latest trends and threats in the cyber security space
  • Identity and access management systems

Certifications (advantageous)

  • CompTIA Security+
  • ISC2 CC (Certified in Cybersecurity)
  • AWS, Microsoft or Google cloud security certifications
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate

Who you are

  • You ask good questions. You don't just accept the way things are done. You can hold your ground in a technical discussion while staying open to other views.
  • You're collaborative by nature and you bring energy to the problems you take on. You don't need to have seen everything yet, but you need to want to.

These are the behaviours we look for:

  • Act, learn and adapt
  • Build one team
  • Stay curious and keep learning
  • Earn and extend trust
  • Have the courage to disagree and commit
  • Inspire optimism and persistence
  • Plan, deliver and raise the bar
  • Simplify and make it easy

What's in it for you

We make it a priority to ensure that each person feels known, valued and focused, with the opportunity to grow. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Career growth that's built in, not bolted on. This role sits within a structured career progression model. You'll get exposure to meaningful projects that develop your autonomy, decision-making and problem-solving over time. We have a high internal promotion rate, and if you're a self-starter who takes initiative, the opportunities here are real.

A team that invests in your development. We actively promote a learning environment and encourage every team member to use the opportunities available to grow and unlock their potential. We're open to upskilling the right person, so foundational cloud and cyber security knowledge combined with the drive to learn is enough to get started here.

Work that matters from day one. You won't be watching from the sidelines. You'll monitor live environments, respond to real threats and work directly with teams across the business to fix issues. We believe in investing in our people's growth, because being your best opens better opportunities.

A culture built on people, not hierarchy. We value humility, informality and an entrepreneurial spirit. We care about our team's well-being and actively promote an inclusive workplace where everyone feels comfortable to speak their mind. Disagree with a decision? Good. That's part of how we work.

Benefits that support your whole life

  • Medical aid coverage
  • Retirement fund (provident fund)
  • Performance-based bonus
  • Employee Volunteer Programme, where you give your time and skills to the communities we serve
  • Access to learning platforms and certification support

Security is a priority, and so are you. With a CIO who champions security and a team growing in both size and influence, we're rooting for you to succeed. What you build here gets noticed.

Why this role

The work is varied and the problems are real. Every day looks different. You'll join a team focused on improving security practices across the business, with clear career progression built into the role and a leadership team that backs you.

Security has a seat at the table. Now we need someone to help us fill it.

Additional Information

  • Clear criminal and credit record
