Build models that shape how we bank
We're one of South Africa's largest banks, and data science sits at the heart of how we grow. We're building an AI strategy that keeps us ahead — and that means getting the right predictive models into production, where they influence real decisions for millions of clients. This role exists to make that happen.

What you'll do
Design and build predictive models that help us understand what drives business performance
Take models from concept to production — working with engineers and business teams to get them live and keep them running
Gather business requirements and translate them into clean, reproducible, deployable code
Work across relational and non-relational databases in cloud environments
Set and uphold best-practice standards for data science — reusability, reproducibility and continuous monitoring
Share your expertise with the team and help others grow their technical knowledge

Our data science team works at the centre of a bank that serves millions of South Africans. The problems we solve — from credit decisioning to client behaviour — directly shape how the business runs and how people experience banking. We work in a cloud environment, across multiple teams and disciplines. The work we build goes live, and it matters.

Why this role is different
The models you build here won't sit in a folder. They go into production and influence how we lend, communicate and make decisions. You'll have the mandate to go deep in your chosen discipline — whether that's NLP, deep learning or something else you know well — and the space to teach others what you know. You'll also work across teams where your input shapes how we approach data science as a function, not just a single project.

What we're looking for:

• A Master's degree in a quantitative or STEM field (Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science or similar) plus 3 years' relevant experience — or an Honours degree with 5 years' relevant experience
• Hands-on experience in data science, machine learning and deploying models into production
• Clean, reproducible coding practice
• Confidence working with relational and non-relational databases
• Experience in at least 1 machine learning language
• Experience working in cloud environments
• A deep understanding of at least 1 data science discipline — NLP, deep learning or similar — and the ability to explain it clearly to others
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
• Good attention to detail with the ability to plan and coordinate across teams
• Experience delivering predictive models into a production environment with multiple teams (advantageous)
• Familiarity with TensorFlow, PyTorch or MXNet (advantageous)
• Understanding of ethical AI design principles (advantageous)
